italienische Gemeinde, in der Lombardei, Provinz Varese, 1 100 Einwohner. Das Ruinenfeld liegt 1 km außerhalb des heutigen Castelseprio mit Resten der Ummauerung aus Antike und Mittelalter, der Burg (4.-12. Jahrhundert), verschiedene Kirchen (7.-11. Jahrhundert) und eines Baptisteriums (6.-7. Jahrhundert). Außerhalb lag u. a. die Kirche Santa Maria foris portas, in der 1944 Fresken von hohem künstlerischem Rang entdeckt wurden; die Datierung ist umstritten (7.-10. Jahrhundert).
 
 
Castelseprio, im frühen Mittelalter eine blühende Stadt, als Verteidigungs- und Verwaltungszentrum für das Gebiet zwischen Ticino, Monte Ceneri und Como um die Mitte des 6. Jahrhunderts angelegt, wurde 1287 von den Mailändern zerstört.
